Before
This darling historic home near the Covington, Kentucky Main Strasse neighborhood had a petite, shady backyard ready to be transformed. We decided to keep the existing fence and enormous catalpa tree, but a very old deck needed to be removed and an old patio that was underneath that.
THE CHALLENGE
- To create a patio and layout in a small space for the client to entertain her friends.
- To select paintings that would thrive in deep shade.
- Work around the trunk of a huge catalpa tree.
After
THE SOLUTION
- We maximized space by building seat walls for seating efficiency.
- We used tried and true shade perennials that thrive in hot, humid shade.
- We crafted a layout that would protect the tree + include his grand trunk as part of the space.
We started working through this entertainment space by considering how our client had a strict budget. We chose to make sure the materials we used were both modern and easy to clean, since there was such a huge tree canopy overhead which dropped leaves often.
While sticking to only the essentials to make the space functional and chic, we used perennials + native trees that would give a lavish green touch.
Everything about the space looks even more striking at night. With just a little added lighting, we made this retreat more charming + more usable.
This backyard went from unusable to inviting, with the right balance of hardscape and horticulture. Finishing touches of a beautiful couch and fire feature complete the space and make for a cozy hangout. A couple of years after installing her project, the homeowner decided to list her home which sold over asking on the first day, partly due to her dynamite backyard.
If you are ready for your amazing BEFORE and AFTER, let’s work together.
